TELEVISION BLACK OUT JOBS
By Andre Austin
Reality TV shows that display white Americans buying & selling:
1. Pawn stars (Las Vegas)
2. Hardcore pawn (Detroit)
3. Real Deal
4. Storage wars: California
5. Storage wars: Texas
6. American restorations
7. Home repair and flips
8. Building choppers bikes
9. Pimping cars out
10. Dog catching bond jumpers
11. Repossessing cars
12. Small aircrafts in Alaska transporting goods
13. Pickers
14. Funeral home service
So whats wrong with this picture is that there isn’t a reality show picturing black people making a honest living. However, there are many TV shows depicting blacks making money as drug dealers and prostitutes.
The first issue of Jet magazine for 2012 quotes Don Cheadle as saying: “For black people you have to be like a prostitute or a gangster” to get an Oscar.
The culture of black teenage attitudes towards careers in sports, music and Hollywood must transition and start to merge math and science into the equation. Its not a matter of brain power but interest and personal likes and dislikes. And many educational inspiration tilts and bends the gravity towards the shortest and easy way out to diplomas and degrees. Students must start realizing that some of the toughest and challenging assignments and classes are the best thing for them in the long term.
The entertainment networks should be throwing in a little bit of integration and come up with an all black reality show getting a J.O. B. on and this should exclude a barbershop and funeral home. These jobs were always left to us because whites didn’t want to comb our nappy hair or fool around with our dead bodies.
So what is the problem when we look at the historical context? Many business and vocations in America had cultural-based Ethic jobs. For example:
Italians ruled unions, ethnic restaurants, fire departments shipyards and docks.
Jews had turf over garment and jewelry, banking and entertainment
Irish alcoholic manufacturing, distilling, police departments, bars
Asians, restaurants, cleaning stores and supply houses.
Arabs, gas stations, liquor stores
After blacks were set free many laws were enacted that prohibited blacks from owning businesses that competed with whites. No other ethnic group in American history but blacks had such a hostile and systematic opposition to our personal freedom, economic independence and right to earn a living.
