When the news first broke in the media, my first inclination was "it was staged." After all the stuff that has come out since then, I'm finding it difficult to accept that so many people are involved with a lie of this magnitude. Are you still convinced this is a hoax?

I respect your position.

As someone who has debated for over 20 years I want you to know that it's okay to have positions of varying degrees of personal investment. This is not a criticism. What do I mean by this?

As I said... first reaction... my "gut" said the same thing. However... I don't listen to me gut when there is hard evidence.

It's perfectly okay to be wrong. The problem with public perception is that too often people get so defensive because they don't want people to think they're wrong about anything and so they overly defend weak positions. In other words... they "invest" too much into an idea simply because they said it. You said it. Fine. But don't be married to it. Divorces are painful. Just say "Yeah, I thought that crap looked staged". That's still accurate. And it shows you were reacting to what we knew at the time. No problem.

But if you marry yourself to that opinion and more evidence starts coming out, now its like people are watching you disregard and dismiss the evidence just to keep holding on to your stated opinion. And that's where we tend to go wrong. How to avoid this?

Use less certain language: "it looks like..." or "I feel like"... or "I think..." And then once the facts come out you can invest more certainty to back up why you thought it. If there's already a lot of facts out there then you can speak on it with a little more certainty to the point you feel confident that more evidence, if it comes out, will only further strengthen your position on what happened. This also keeps you from sounding like the boy who cried wolf because when you do say something with your whole chest, people are more likely to believe you because you use your credibility more judiciously.

Again... this is not a criticism.
