We all have the right to go
down to the water when we need to...

In the beginning, vitality was free
    it was
    raindrops on roses
    whiskers on kittens
    these things
    that momma
    could see easily

    most of her life,
    spent,
    outdoors,
    gardening and nurturing souls
    feeling well
    sipping tea
    reading Ebony
    enjoying simple conversations
    and making sure she'd take
    her "One A Day"
    early enough in the afternoon

In the end, full of vicodin (narcotic analgesics)
    it was coquina shells
    that momma wanted to touch
    One year indoors
    scripting delusional notes

    scripting

    delusional

    notes
    on the backside
    of white envelopes
oxygen mask depending from her face
she wanted me to take her to
    Transcend Beach

    to let her kneel
    once more,
    to feel the sea shells
and to set her eyes on high
    before Helios
    as she watched him ride

    ride in
    his chariot across the
    evening sky
she had a few more moves left - -
    but not many
    including a written request
    to change beneficiaries
on her policies for the fifth time
    (or was it the fifteenth?)
and a last squeeze of my hand

    my momma wasn't to particular
    about nature,
    she didn't love the "country" - -
she wasn't "into" or "out of"
    anything .... in particular

I guess, no more than I.

... But we all have a right to go down
to the water when we need to

Look deeper into the piece ~ there is a deeper meaning my brotha....much deeper than that of anything that's on the 'surface'....
This piece isn't necessarily one that you could consider as an
"at a glance" type of scribe.... :)

Thanks for the read & I do hope that you'll take
another peek at this so as to inhale the deep
sense of the meaning that is laid out...

We all have a right to go down
to the water when we need to

well I certainly read this, sis.... a few times... and its meaning for me is of a very personal experience with a loved one, a capsulized yet comprehensive picture of a complete lifetime...that is at its ending. Very poignant portrait ~ and as always, the kind of poetry that moves me most. Love the way you scribe me into the scenes where I can be in the room....where mama is scribbling, with the O2 mask, her need to squeeze your hand and feel those coquina shells once more, the only things sustaining her.

Yes, N2, I saw it. And yes, "we all have a right to go down to the water when we need to"

This is my new N2 favorite

    thank you sis

    Sustah A :)

A piece ain't a piece until my sustah friend
stops in to give me her take on an N2 scribe!!
Now I am satisfied with knowing that this
piece comes across & holds true meaning
and it doesn't sound crazy ... Thank you Alyce
for taking the time to let me know what
phrases etc., drew you in... thank ya' :)

The depth of this piece leaves me thinking about similar situations with my grandmother......Strong tower in the early years, but time moved upon her frame and soon she became weak and vunerable......just before she crossed over to the other side...she went to the water to bask for one last time in the sweet memories of life..........

    Thank you for this.

Thank you so much Gypsyman! I personally enjoy this one, it is really sentimental to me ~ I'm happy in knowing that you see it as a re-read & that its worth the ink on paper :)

    Thanks
