June 10, 2002 ~ a day to remember ~
I felt a change before I saw the shadows
bend into an eerie slant across the pavement
I couldn't hear the birds anymore
I wasn't even aware they'd stopped singing since morning
The colors of my day ran together;
spotted and mottled like classic monet
and I shielded my eyes against the faceless glare
nothing was the same, not even the sound of my
own heels ... strange and hollow
with a 3 second delay after I touched down
The trees leaned away as if blown by the wind
but the absence of air caused me to gasp and wheeze
all motion wound down as I struggled
to move in an impossible direction
against an unyielding force
The only sound were the sirens blasting in my head
so loud I could feel my pulse beating in my temples
as the beads of sweat formed upon my brow
I was unable to cry out; my tongue was too heavy
& my lips refused to part
With the only strength I could find in my body,
I straightened my back, in defiance of the evil which
threatened to push me down
lifted my face toward the smoldering sky
and looked the sun dead in the eye
