there's been the personal hell desert to cross
unholy trinity of diseases
she fought for her mind and her life
so hard and for so long and it will never be 100 percent gone
her parents set her up to be neurotic
the wounds completely healed but scars remain
there's been the work mountain to climb
busting butt her entire adult life
to make ends meet but only staying
one or two steps ahead of poverty because
her passions don't seem to pay much
or there's not enough work in them
there's been the love river to cross
she's never had a decent, loving relationship
she attracts the wrong people and
has been abused or dissed by all of them
has never really been in love
is not sure that truly exists
but the summit is approaching finally
the light can be seen
life may get easier soon
she may, at last, be free
yet
she worries that it's too late for her
that
the battles have beat the caring right out of her
and once she gets all she has been striving for
that she'll be too tired and jaded for it to matter anymore
she may be so used to being on guard and tense
that she can't learn how to relax and let down defense
and when it comes to love
cynicism might reign
hopes crushed too many times
for her to open her heart again
20 years of struggle may
weigh too much to throw away
looking ahead she strains to see
prays to Spirit, 'don't let it be too late for me'
