Saturday I heard my uncle say the weather was going to drop in the thirties
    I didn’t believe him,
Just like I don’t want to believe your dying

    It’s true though
    It’s so cold
The wind is biting my skin
    Freezing my tears,
    It’s not a dream anymore

I still remember you going with me to flag football practice when I was little
You cheered, and I’d play my heart out for you
When we were winning and losing

    Today, I feel I’m losing a game
Were down twenty eight three Grandma,
I know we could comeback; we’ve done it once before

I’m afraid today won’t be our great comeback
Somewhere along the line I fumbled the ball,
Death intercepted the pass off my fingertips

I’m trying to run him down
If I could only put my hand on his shoulders,
    He’s too swift for me
    I hear the announcer shouting
    “He’s at the 50,45,30,25,15,10,5.”

There’s nothing else I can do now
Except stop at the ten and watch him run the other way with my heart
I’m trying to keep a straight face, but it keeps crumbling
Just like your cornbread I love so much

I know how it feels to ride the bench
    It’s nothing like this
    It’s so cold,
I can’t bear to sit down this time

I know how the tin man feels now
    I want a heart
To stop this oil from leaking down my face

    I’m cheering for you
On the sidelines of your bed
    Routing for you,
    I’m no fan of death

    I know you tired Ma
I see it in your face
Your foreheads damp like the grass just before the sunrise
Water drops are running down the wrinkled leaves,
Beside the face of a woman who’s as beautiful as a flower

I only know to say these words
    “I love you”

I’m proud to be your grandson
    I’m so proud of you
    You’re my MVP and
I’m happy to give you the game-winning ball,
    My heart
    Always and Forever,
Cause I’ll always be your greatest fan.

Wow...this pulled at my heartstrings. The whole composition of this, using the metaphor of a football game that you are desperately trying to win, was masterful. I have known a similiar pain, and I really felt your words poet.

    Awesomely posed poet...

Wow, this piece pulled at the strings of my heart, caught one string ...and ran with it.
I felt so much life in this...through all the pain. brilliant piece.

This was beautiful and a tearjerker all at the same time. I feel your pain and know that these thing happen to all of us at some time its just your turn. You always have a family here in all of us. If it helps just think of it like this, Now instead of watching from the sidelines she'll be wacthing from the skybox suites above us all. Still being your number 1 fan.
