IN HER SHOES
IN MY MOTHER’S SHOES I TRIED TO STAND WOBBLING TO AND FRO
JUST ALLOWING MY HEAD TO BE THE BALANCER THAT WOULD DETERMINE THE WAY THAT MY BODY WOULD GO
HANDS TO THE FLOOR
I’D FALL ONLY TO THEN AGAIN RISE
JUST WANTING TO WALK IN MOMMIES SHOES FULL KNOWING THEY WEREN’T MY SIZE
SEEMINGLY SO, MY FEET DID GROW
PRAISES AND THANKS TO A THING CALLED TIME
WHICH IS MADE UP OF JOY AND PAIN
OH HOW TIME CAN BE SO CRUEL AND KIND
THAT MY MIND HAS PUT IT ALL IN A FRAME
SO THAT I MAY NEVER FORGET THOSE DAYS THAT CAME TO PAST
WHEN WALKING IN MOMMIES SHOES MADE EVERYONE LAUGH
AND ME COOKING LEAVES WAS JUST A THING
LIKE MOMMY COOKING GREENS
AND AS I WAS STIRRING UP THE WILD BERRIES
SHE WAS MIXING THE NECK BONES INTO THE LIMA BEANS
IN TIME I DID LEARN
THAT WALKING IN MOMMIES SHOES
WOULD BE A THING THAT I’D HAVE TO EARN
NOT SO EASY, SEE THAN DO
BUT MOMMY MADE IT SEEM SO EASY FOR TRUE
BUT NOW I REALIZE DIFFERENTLY
AND KNOW THAT I’VE SURVIVED
UP TIL NOW
ONLY BECAUSE OF WHAT SHE HAS INSTILLED IN ME
AND SOMETIMES I STILL FIND IT HARD
AND WONDER IF I’LL EVER BE ABLE TO STAND IN HER PLACE AND DO HER JOB
WITH A PHENOMINAL, PRECISION
SEEMINGLY SO EFFORTLESSLY
SHE DEFIES GRAVITY
SO EXCUSE ME
IF I HAPPEN TO STUMBLE IN THE DARKNESS AS I GO
OR IF WHEN THE ROAD COMES TO A FORK
AND I’M CONFUSED AS TO WHICH WAY TO GO
BECAUSE YOU SEE THOUGH
I AM NOW A WOMAN
WITHOUT ANYTHING TO ANYONE PROVE
I AM ALWAYS CONTEMPLATING
AND PATIENTLY WAITING
THE DAY THAT I WILL GROW INTO HER SHOES

That image of a little girl in her mother's shoes...how endearing. I love how you encorporated that image throughout this piece. For in life, we do come back to that, trying, even if we don't realize it, to manage life like mom. And we learn, that although she made it look easy, that management was, and is, more than a notion. I found myself smiling, and nodding my head in agreement, throughout this piece. Another great piece from you, Happy Mother's Day!

Thank you all for relating. As women we do indeed learn when once we actually reach woman hood, that it was nothing and yet everything we thought it would be, I am in my thirties, and I find myself calling my mom on a daily, asking her questions about everything and anything, even trying to shock her with little tid bits of information about me. I just want her to know, the little freaky, loving, forgiving person that she raised.I dare think of the day that I may pick up the phone and she's not on the other end, so I love her everyday, not just on mother's day, because she truly means the world to me.
Be Blessed mothers and enjoy your day!
