The White Priestess of Black Magic

Bent double by age, the high-priestess of Nigeria's Yoruba spirit-world shuffles forward from under the trees, reaching out a white, blotchy hand in welcome.

Mrs Wenger resurrected the traditions of the river-god Osun

Half a lifetime ago, Susanne Wenger dedicated herself to reviving the traditions of the pre-Christian Yoruba gods, "the orishas", and left Austria to make Nigeria her home.

The frail 94-year-old artist, with one seeing eye, has been a driving force in Osogbo town, where she is in charge of the sacred grove, a place where spirits of the river and trees are said to live.

Maybe you can call Susanne our saviour

"Maybe you can call Susanne our saviour," says Mr Ajala, now the high-priest of Sango, the lightning-god.

"Was Christ an African? Muhammad was an Arabian. Why can't our saviour be European?"

Susanne's knowledge of the behaviour and character of all the deities means she has actually become Yoruba now

"It's a disgrace to the Yoruba that the person who came to save our culture was a European," he says.

"But Susanne's knowledge of the behaviour and character of all the deities means she has actually become Yoruba now."

THE YORUBANS IN NIGERIA BEEN LETTING "OTHER" PEOPLE COME INTO THEIR PRIESTHOOD FOR YEARS, THAT WHY OTHER TRADITIONS BE LAUGHING AT THEM. I KNOW THE YORUBANS IN BAHIA BRAZIL KEEP THEIR TRADITIONS AND PRIESTHOOD BY LINEAGE.

To hell with that! White people can't even access certain entities, so its impossible for them to "revive" a tradition. That's straight propaganda being perpetuated by westerners with strongholds in Nigeria.

African spirituality is COMPLETELY and TOTALLY dependent on one's bloodline ties to that tradition. There is NO WAY around that.

ALSO THE TITLE OF THE ARTICLE IS MISLEADING BECAUSE IT DONT SAY IF SHE WAS EVER INITIATED IN THE OSUN/OSHUN OR IS ACTUALLY A HIGH PRIESTESS. ALSO HOW CAN YOU REVIVE SOMETHING THAT WAS ALREADY THERE.I KNOW PRIESTESS OF OSHUN WHO WENT TO NIGERIA TO GET THEIR "HEAD" AND BEST BELIEVE ME THEY WOULD HAVE NOT TAKEN TOO KINDLY TO SEE A "WHITE" PERSON.ALSO SHE WOULD HAVE A NEW NAME IF SHE WAS INITIATED IN THE MYSTERIES OF OSHUN, SHE WOULDN'T BE CALLED MRS WENGER!!!

SHE JUST A PERSON WHO LIKE THE CULTURE AND DECIDED TO STAY AND SPREAD THE NEWS ABOUT IT, THATS IT

I seen this story before. For anyone to doubt, bloodline come talk with me. Listen to what I really have to tell you and you will know. Occasionally, there are "white" people who get involved in the traditions, but the mandate is not there for them like blood. No orisa practitioner would speak about a jesus or a muhammad in the same breath as an Oduduwa or Orunmila. None. In the reality of a follower of orisa, these beings do not matter so no reference or deference would be given to them.

Addendum: Let me clarify for initial statements. I find it laughable that a person who belongs to a set of people that sought to destroy African culture would now be considered a savior of the culture her people wished to destroy. The salvation of African culture - be it Yoruba, Akan, Bakongo, Dogon, Wolof, Mende, or what have you - is in the people who carry the genetic memory and bloodlines of that culture. The salvation of African culture beats in the heartbeat of every African person or person of identifiable African descent that seek to carry on the traditions of their ancestors unabashly, without shame or disgrace. Our ancestors were brought to these shores to toil as slaves so their children would seek to and have the passion to perpetuate the reality of the ancients. We were transported here so the memory of Oduduwa, Osei Tutu, Sunjata Keita, Nzinga, and others would forever live in our efforts. Our blood contains the very code of African culture rejuvenated and reincarnated. The African spirit, the soul of the Motherland, that so many debase and belittle is the fire that lights our way as the followers of Isanusi. It is the voice of Asr saying "I Re-Member", a voice of Reclamation!!! Resonate power y'all. We are the ones we've been waiting for!!!!! Ankobia!!!! One Love!

This is yet another example of how devils steal our culture, bastardize it and sell it back to us at a profit. And some of us are foolish enough to believe. Anybody who believes that this devil has the power to summon an Energy, that her ancestors insulted by stealing and abusing its children, gets exactly what they deserve. They get to shared in the wrath that will come.

Right you are. I'm no longer going to even argue these points. If folks say bloodlines have nothing to do with it I'm gonna let it be. At the same time I'm just gonna stay closer Rooted in family. Peace
