An excerpt from the book "The Healing Drum: African Wisdom Teachings" by Yaya Diallo and Mitchell Hall. (Note: Fienso is a village in Mali, West Africa.)

Mitchell Hall writes in the introduction:

When Yaya has brought Canadians and Americans to Fienso, the village elders have recognzed this as supportive of the traditional ways, for these Westerners have been eager to learn about drumming and village life. Unlike the earlier white colonialists who wanted to destroy the African culture, the new visitors affirm it through their respect and interest. Yaya comments on this phenomenon with a touch of irony. "The West may help preserve African culture for the Africans."
