Each poet earns a little victory.....
    With each poem completed.
A win over the stiff and starched collar of language.
Refusal to descend to the nest of common voices.

    Whether longing and thirsting eyes,
Or the gorgeous clouds of the sunset...
The poet searches for the mystical alchemy
To extract light and power from words....
    To approach the Inexpressible.

Traveling beyond the realm of regular speech,
Beyond the margins of the page,
    The poet struggles with ideals,
    Reason, instinct and perfection.

A week of fighting with connotation and ambiguity,
A month of fighting his/her own personal demons.....
    The late night battles with
    verbs, nouns and adjectives.
Drawn into war with tense and meter,
    He/she searches for precise meaning
    In a imprecise medium.

    After constant re-writes,
    A wastebasket full of casualties,
The Poet emerges with a bouquet of colors.
Words parading brightly in crisp simile.
Light and darkness, color and texture
Straight line and curve, dancing stanzas
Find comfort in a ingenious symmetry.

Each poet earns a little victory.
A poem, a gem, a jewel, a marvel in sentiment.
An extension of the private self,
    Into the public arena.

to the victor goes the spoils

    The victor wins my heart
    Invades my mind and spirit
Speaks to me in a tongue
    Yet to be discovered
    Expresses the words
    Yet to be articulated
You move me with the breeze
    Collecting my thoughts
    And even my utterances
    Allowing them to breathe
    New life through your expressions
    Poet... your victory is won
Each time you steal my thoughts
Each time you put a face to the faceless
Each time you place your pen to paper
    Poet... scribe of many....
    Your victory is inspiration
    Your victory is understanding
Your victory is reborn in every drop

Poet... loved that drop... your versatility shows more and more every post... flow on

Your words bring to life the agony and ecstasy between the quill and the poet. Marvelous.
