Well meaning friends all came by to
commiserate with me…share my pain
but they haven’t been able to see that I haven’t
even shed the first tear

Every time I started to speak, they shushed me
with comforting words dripping with
concern and understanding…holding my
hands and looking into my eyes for
signs of an emotional break-down…

after all, I’m due to crack at any time

But it’s the beginning of a smile that forms
at the corners of my mouth…instead....

It’s the beginning of a sense of freedom from
a horrible bondage for 42 years that was
invisible to their eyes
because I never told nobody my business…

You know, my husband had been an Elder in
our church for many, many years,
but he wasn't nothing nice at home
womanizing old rascal! But I didn't say nothing...

Couldn't do nothing...

Just been waiting for my day...see I knew
all that slipping and sliding was gonna kill him dead
one day... Bible says "wait on the Lawd", right?

It’s the beginning of a new life I could only
dream about while he was still alive…
while I was still his (cause couldn't
no decent church lady divorce her husband, you
know)…

long as I was under his control
…this TRUE peace I have right now,
was only a distant hope

But God is good, chile...

Yes, I've been smiling, and the sistas must
think I’ve surely gone insane ~ after all they
kept saying
"he had been SUCH a good
man"…I "had been so lucky…" humph

"Too bad he’s gone…" and, "how WILL you go on, sis?"
humph

(mind you, some of these sammme sistas
made room for his shoes under their beds,
on a regular, hypocritacle heffas all of em!!)

Finally when I was able to get a word in,
I cleared my throat and
said with my voice cracking a little,

"I'll get along like always,
leaning on the Everlasting Arms;
one foot right in front of the other,
yes Lawd, thank you Jesus, thank you Jesus!!
My Jesus gonna keep taking good care of me!"….
humph
