What is the paradox of our reality? Brother Edwards once made an excellent observation as it regards black and white people. He stated that: "Back in the day when our people were at their best in terms of knowledge, civilization and spirituality that we were defeated by a bunch of people who at that time were at their worst." Now that we are at our worst and they are at their best, what chance do we really have? Many of us may not have actually given much thought to that question but we need to. For in as much as they are now at their best, their best is only in terms of technology, science and newer methods of dealing death to the earth and the people on it. The question now is;...but what of our people? In last nights class I spoke about "the only black people that were wanted in America." How did I find out which black people were wanted in America? Abraham Lincoln stated in a speech to our black leaders in 1862 "which black people that they wanted and why." From all indications we have collectively filled his request. Of course this isn't 100% but this is why there is division and conflict among our people. Many of us are still trying to fill the request while some of us are not. So what exactly did President Lincoln say? Read for yourself what he said and then look at our people, our so called leaders, our actions and thought processes and ask yourself one question..."When did the thought process, the actions, the education, the values and the structure of white people become the standard by which we would govern and fashion our own lives by?" Surely something is wrong...for we look but do not see....we hear but do not listen....we talk but do not communicate....we react but do not act....we follow but do not lead....we think but do not know how to think....we are the world, while everyone else is themselves....we are humanitarians while no one else is humane....we love any and everybody but who loves us!? In fact, in 1862 President Lincoln gave a speech to the black leaders of that time and made it clear that; the only black people that they wanted were those that were what we would call "house negroes". His exact words are as follows: There is an unwillingness on the part of our people, harsh as it may be, for you free colored people to remain with us. Now, if you could give a start to white people, you would open a wide door for many to be made free. If we deal with those who are not free at the beginning, and whose intellects are clouded by Slavery, we have very poor materials to start with. If intelligent colored men, such as are before me, would move in this matter, much might be accomplished. It is exceedingly important that we have men at the beginning capable of thinking as white men, and not those who have been systematically oppressed. In other words, here was the President letting black leaders know that, as long as they can use our people to advance their people, everything was okay. As long as they can get our people to "think as their people think", everything was okay. As long as "they can get, use and keep those of our people who can FORGET THE SYSTEMIC OPPRESSION THAT THEIR PEOPLE INFLICTED UPON OUR PEOPLE" everything was okay.
