Better known to slaves as
Hiring Day or Heartbreak Day. The only other significance to January 1 would be the effective date of the Emancipation Proclamation(January 1, 1863) first issued on September 22, 1962; however, that action only prematurely stopped the demise felt by slaves, until the 13th amendment was ratified in 1865.
