Balconies, canopies in the clouds, sky of red clay
yet there remained a glowing in the night
She wished for wings to sail up into the fading day
Drink from that pink oasis, swoop down on those hidden lights.

"Reflections of unrealized dreams, wanting satisfaction,"
Thus the sailboat's siren song, his own strong wings unfurled
"Desire, fulfillment, lit by Soul, Passion
Carrying his beacon as he walks behind the world."

"You may not go," they replied, Repression, Convention, Scorn
Mere jealousy in a halo, their world a narrow, rocky shore
Ironically, like that on which she would be cast, they warned
But she knew she was taking nothing from them, in wanting more

The sailboat said nothing, silence made all the words
She asked, "Don't you worry I'll one day still want more?"
But somehow where they had not listened, he heard.
"Bring your faults and doubts," he said, "else, how could you be?"

They left that crowded, stifling beach, their hearts set free from strife
Wind behind them, future before them, filling her sailboat's wings
The clouds lifted from her soul, to breath deep and happy, full of life
As he carried her atop the waves, unafraid, unfaltering.

At sea, they passed many wrecks, ships whose wills were weak
As the storm raged around them, they looked calmly on the remains
One woman, her sailboat, together stronger than that vaunted fleet
Who had had their freedom, but who had forged their own chains.

She stole the beacon's lantern, hung it on her sailboat's mast
To light their sanctuary, where their rules were their own
Here, beyond the horizon, the sky lit to day, at last
Now they were the beacon, envied, for others to follow.
