It is only presumed and assumed, among most in the states, that everything was just abandoned or suppressed, whereas the backbone of black culture was (or is) the offshoots of what went on in those so called 'slave quarters', etc., just as is true in the rest of the Americas, etc...

I.e ., did a once free man just 'forget' everything they knew, because he got enslaved?

I also do believe Alex Haley answered that question for us!
