His six-year-old hands have selected his rocks
Light in weight, flat, nearly round
A smile accents his face
As he looks at the lake glistening in the mid-day sun

He stands on the bank
Looking for a perfect path on the water
He steps to the left
Then back to the right
A soft spring wind causes a slight ripple
But the lake is still perfect
He now stands ready to exercise his skill

A few practice motions with his right arm
He positions the rock between his thumb and forefinger
Tight enough for distance
Yet soft enough for the perfect spin

With a motion rivaled by only Satchel Paige
A perfect sidewinder delivery of the rock left his hand
One-two-three-four-and the all-important fifth skip
“Yes” he yelled
Smiling as he pumped his fist

He stared at the final spot of the final skip
He looked down through the lake
Up on his toes
His widening smile told what he saw in his mind
As his rock slowly floated downward
Still energized by the might of his throw
Finally resting on the soft sand below
