She stood shaking on the bank
of the dark river
at the fringes of Phildelphia....
across rushing waters sat
the squalor of Camden
she felt
how it looked
shook with desolation
pain etched in every angle
eyes lost to madness

She held a dirty bundle
clutched insanely tight
she cooed and rocked the package
savagely waiting for the baby
to awaken
slowly over hours
finally facing
the fact

her baby was dead...

She cried and stared
at the
rivers promise
to hide the secret
of her failure

it whispered to her...

"Come to me.....come to my dark bosom....."

"Come child...my cold current will soothe your pain....."

she heard it clearly now
mere whisper had gained momentum
as if the river had personified
and it rocked her gently
now with the voice of her father
as she continued her futile
ritual with the burning bundle
in her arms...

Yes..it burned
burned with dirty proof
guiding and feeding her guilt
arms and chest
feeling the heat of shame
blame blossoming
and growing in her soul
her only fruit bore
bitter thoughts
of despair......

no one cared....

but The River...

...she was sixteen..
she wanted to stop
the burning
so
that night
she
married
The River.
...and The River kept
all of
his
promises.

Forever.
