It's a sad situation... from what I remembered, there were a lot of push in robberies. Not sure of his area though. And secondly, home protection is always key, you never want to give them the opportunity of gaining a foothold in your home. The door is the easiest point of attack because it's a narrow access point.

But it should be done legally.... following the guidelines set in that state...

Though it begs a few questions.
It's normal these days to have a cellphone instead of a home phone... but how many times have you fallen asleep in your bed without your phone close at hand to call the police?
You seen a shadowy figure in the peephole move towards the back and knock there... After ensuring the target is empty, crooks don't knock for long.
There is a step process from getting your weapon and loading it for use of home protection in Michigan... which took longer than fishing phone out of his jeans pocket in the bathroom.

    ...

Yeah, the first person up was her friend, testifying to their actions prior to the murder. The witness spoke on playing a game of taking Vodka shots and smoking marijuana.

Strategy of the prosecution appears to be establishing credibility of the facts, early, but are at risk of showing no empathy for the victim ... This could be a bad move, hopefully.

So when a caucasian kills a black person its self defense but when a black person shoots anybody its murder.

He murders somebody then the prosecutor says its on the defense to prove it wasnt self defense smh, it should be on them to prove that it was self defense. Just because he was scared doesn't mean his life was in danger.

hmmm i think the phone next to the bed might be an age thing.... most folk my age id say youd keep it close to you all the time - else how are you gonna check facebook or twitter or get a snapchat just before bed or soon as your up - this guy was quite old though so maybe aint into that....

personally id have shouted out asking who was there - then if nobody answered id have probly shouted out that i was armed - then maybe kneel down behind the couch with my gun trained on the door - im pretty certain i wouldnt fire till someone actually broke the door open - but then who knows what was goin through the guys head - i think its definitely voluntry manslaughhter though - maybe along the lines of imperfect self defense or something

Exactly it was other options. The most important thing is that he didn't even know if she was a threat, he was just scared and unloaded his gun. What if it was a lost child he couldn't see through the peephole...

The article says the "screen" door was torn/blown(?) off, NOT the "front" door. How does one blow off a screen door without seeing who or what is behind it? It was first degree, premeditated murder. He should have gotten the chair. Life without parole at the least.
