seems like when i was str8
i couldn't keep peace

before
when prefabricated oils
artificial chemicals
unpronounceable ingredients
lubricated my strands

before
to come into the flat lands
of my scalp
with no trees to give shade
no coils to rest against
on worry days
was to ask peace
to bask in the hot sun of the sahara
and sink in to the quicksand
of my strands

now
it's natural coily curls
napping into a new
more refined kink
mature in it's waves
and loops

now
that i'm nappy
my coils welcome all

now
peace has flown back
to my nappy forest
it has built a new home
for it's old home
was stripped away
by relaxer tornados and hurricans

now
peace has taken charge
it stands guard
and with it's presence
i've found boldness
to dare man creature
to reject me
and my afrocentricity

now
love comes up from within
to enjoy my forest
it finds the spring in my coils
as relazing as a plush recliner
love kicks up it's feet
and lay back to in enjoy
heaven's view from
my scalp's surface

now
joy and happiness
take small trips
to lower plains
and there at the top
of my brow
they've spread
a cloth for afrocentric
colors and style
up on my face
it hides all
imperfections
show casing it's beauty

now
i bask in heavenly suns
as they highlight
my natural sheen

now
pure and light in weight
the oils of mother earth
protect my newness

peace joy love and happiness
have built up my pride

now
self-assured
i reside and abide
in the power of my coils
