This is such a powerful thing that I think many of us have missed giving the veridict of the Trayvon Martin case.
There was another child killed 'Davis' in Florida in cold blood around the same time as Trayvon Martin. He was listening to music in an SUV and the white guy told them to turn it down like he's their massa or something. Don't get me wrong I can't stand loud music because it invades my space but these are kids so I deal with it. Davis was gunned down in the back seat (two shots - killed him) and there were two other black kids in the SUV. The white man is claiming 'Stand Your Grounds' to justify the killing of this innocent boy. His claim is that he saw what looked like a gun and according to the 'stand you grounds' law - if you feel that you are in danger you can kill to protect yourself. So if this drunk man thought he saw a gun which is his claim - then he will as Zimmerman get off scott free. Mind you this is happening in the same state where a black woman shot a warning shot in the house and got 20 years.
So what is this positive I speak of? The most prominent people in both Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis case are their FATHERS!!!!! Black men being there for their sons. I don't know if anyone has noticed but in or generation black men are trying to make a stand - even if they started out not being about anything- they are making adjustments to be a part of their kids lives - unlike our parents and their generation. Black men are starting to step up in my generation and I hope visually this empacts the social standing with black men globally. I don't live with my kids and they live 400 miles away from me - but I see them every single day via video chat. We have avenues to be with our kids even when it seems hards ... black men today are fighting to be a part of their kids life and that is the positive within the negative. They are showing - airing on national TV black men being a part of their sons lives.
Rodney Davis - we got your back - Tracy Martin we got your back!!! Black men - who are being fathers - we see you and I as a black man being a father to my kids - have your back!!!!
