Inspired by Poet Kalamu Ya Salaam

I drank from the Poet's words,
his eulogy for a beloved friend
    well, that was the subtitle
otherwise I might not have known

The Poet strung jeweled syllables, turned
phrases like the clarity of perfect diamonds,
transporting me to a time I had not shared with them,

yet, I was there in his sacred moment

As I looked on, the narrative held me
captive; tears pooled in the corners
    of my eyes, stubborn
unwilling to flow in wild streams down
    my face

    My cheeks burned,
the depth of his words blurred my vision,
ahh, but too late to shield them from my heart!

This beating thing within my chest
leaped out... it was more than sympathy
more like kinship...we'd both experienced loss

Every waking moment I lived and breathed this unspeakable pain

For so many days I'd been struggling for words
to accompany me in my own time of grief
yea, in this season of mourning

Sometimes, not caring about trite expressions,
    dangling participles and the like

(and nothing reasonable rhymes with death....)

Other times, concerned that my cathartic release
would be mawkish, miserable, and melodramatic
    impotent....unworthy of the ink,

    But the Poet's soulful tribute
drew me inside the last time he saw his beloved
    the very final moments...

and touched every part of all the things
    I wanted to say

i've sipped from the cup of your heart wrenching best...tasted delectable mouthfulls of its tangy sweetness that delves deep within. like most, i've wept in its presence.
