This is the perfect set of threads because its more important than every other discussion. Yes, it's more important than racism, more important the street violence or community support or any of the other various and sundry topics we discuss endlessly. Because our survival is more about language and focus then anything else - and we need to change these things. Negatives are a problem, but no matter what they do not nor ever will outweigh the positives. Consider this:

If 1/3 of Black males are "involved" with the criminal justice system, then 2/3rd are not.

If 42% of Black women have never been married, then 58% have.

We complain that Blacks are not getting together with the same breath as we say 70% of Black children are born out of wedlock. When unless we have an entire population name "Jesus" then somehow Black people got together to make those babies.

If 24% of Black people are living in poverty (and that's high number, indeed) then 86% are not.

Let's try other numbers.

Black own businesses account for $135 Billion on revenue.

The average median income for the Black population in America is $32,000

8 out of 9 Black males do not end up in prison between the ages of 25 to 29

The number of Blacks enrolled in higher education increased 12% between 2010 and 2013, and according to statistics this number increases each year.

See, it's all about the language. This is not to say there are not problems to be solved, but this is saying we need to couch the discussion another way. If we can survive several attempts at genocide, 400 years of slavery, 100+ years of various forms of Jim Crow (because America was by far not the only white run country guilty of this) then why we think our chances are so bad now? How can we possibly believe that somehow things are worse. Things are bad but it is within our power to make them better, unlike slavery or Jim Crow or genocide, and we got through those.

Positive. There's not enough of it when in fact we have so much to celebrate. Maybe we should seriously think about doing so.
