Originally the advent of the Spring "vernal equinox" was celebrated between March 20th and April 5th. This makes sense b/c spring is the time when Mother Earth comes to life rather than being a time when everything is frozen solid.

Until about 1582 the New Year was celebrated on April 1st. In order to flip the meaning -- April Fools' Day was incorporated and the world has been following this mixed up mockery every since.

    Q. Who changed the date?
    A. Juliua Caesar changed the date in honor of Janus. Then Constantine in turn carried on this practice as the conversion from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar was set into place. And the rest -- as they say -- is his story!

Don't take my word for it - look it up for yourself.
