    His hands were rough
    A Black Man’s hands
    Working hands
    Black skin
    His knuckles blacker

    Years of hard work
    Seen clearly on his face
    A strong, black, handsome face
    Worn and deeply aged
Like the leather tool belt around his waist
    Pencils and other measuring instruments
Neatly placed in his left breast pocket

I found myself staring at his name
    James Anderson III
The embroidered script on his work shirt
    So official
    He was important to me

    Important because here he is
    At least 65 years old
    Proud
    Black
    A Man’s man
    Working
    And better yet
    Third generation

    His voice deep
    Rumbling through the elevator’s air
    “Excuse me please”
Everyone moved out of his way
Not out of fear or even courtesy
Respect is what he demanded just by his presence

    Anderson Construction
Boldly and proudly displayed on the back of his shirt
    “Quality work since 1937”
I held my head a little higher the rest of the day
    Walked a little taller
    Felt a little better

    This almost

    made me shed a tear....

a man who displays pride and honour in himself and his place in life, simply by being himself...

someone you can look at and with a glance know his measure as a man and be grateful for having witnessed it...

    a wonderful piece....

    In complete agreement

    with Kitana....

this moved me...as I watched in those brief moments in the elevator, how this man and all he stands for, moved & inspired you. Changed you.

This is for all the boys and girls who never had a role model. All the men and women who need to recognize.

    thank you
