In some remote southern regions of Malawi, it's traditional for girls to be made to have sex with a paid sex worker known as a "hyena" once they reach puberty. The act is not seen by village elders as rape, but as a form of ritual "cleansing". However, as Ed Butler reports, it has the potential to be the opposite of cleansing - a way of spreading disease.

A rite of passage that pushes girls into sex

When Grace learned she'd be going to a camp with her friends, she was thrilled. Every girl around her age in her southern Malawi village would attend the rite of passage, known as an initiation camp. They counted down to what seemed like summer camp.

"We were happy, because we didn't know what was there," she said.

    Child Marriage Outlawed in Malawi

Let Girls Lead has amazing news to share - the Malawian Parliament has just passedlandmark legislation banning child marriage. After five years of advocacy by Let Girls Lead (LGL) partners and other key organizations, the government of Malawi has voted to pass a National Marriage Law increasing the legal age of marriage from 15 to 18 years.

This unprecedented victory guarantees a Malawian girl's right to be a girl, for the first time in history.

This major win for girls would not have happened without the undaunted advocacy of the Adolescent Girls Advocacy Network (AGANET), a national network of NGOs founded byour alumni in 2011, and the strong leadership of LGL grantee partner, the Girls Empowerment Network (GENET).
