Why a knife ?
Unlike a gun, you must get close
close enough to smell the opponent’s
morning coffee and the last cigarette
on their breath, putting yourself in danger.

But the most important reason for me
is that a knife is personal. It is not accidental,
not a lucky shot or something meant for someone else.
It is intended to bring grievous harm and death to its victim.

That's all I wanted. I wanted to see the look in his eye
when he realized that it wasn't me who would die this day.
I wanted to hear that subtle exhale as he breathed his last breath.
I wanted to see the light in his eyes dim as death overtook him.
Most of all I wanted to feel the wet slap of my grip against his skin
as the tempered steel tore through his stomach, through his diaphragm
and into his heart, releasing my full hatred and his last hope at once.

I was Told

My dad always told me to fear a man with a knife because a man with a knife truly means business because he understands that he has to get close and is willing to take the chance to do so and that he wants it to be personal--I believe him still--a gun can be impersonal because it gives the wielder a safety margin, but with a knife it is truly mano y mano--Ra
