The purpose of this post is to bring us, as Black People, back to the Jesus Paul preached to the Roman Church. This was only a few years after he met Jesus on the Damascus Road. So, there is no in doubt my mind that he knew Jesus was God. In fact, Paul had spent three years in the Arabian Desert talking directly to Jesus. So, Jesus must have identified himself as the God of his ancestors Abaraham, Isaac and Jacob. So, Paul was content to preach in his name. And then, Paul was given his commission to go to Rome and tell everyone about Jesus.
I am giving you, as Black People, the same Good News (Gospel) about Jesus as Paul gave to the Roman: that Jesus is the God of the Bible and the same God who inspired the writing of the Bible itself. In John 1:1 we read: "In the beginning was the Word, ... and the Word was God." Now this is said plain enough for us to understand exactly what is being said. That the Word, or Jesus, is God. And if we can understand that John was a devout Jew, we know that according to Jewish Theology that God to them was one person. In plain language, Monotheism, i.e., one being alone. (Deuteronomy 6;4) And in plainer language John is saying that Jesus is this God.
Now most people object to John's conclusion that Jesus is this one being or entity by pointing to the middle part of this verse which says, " and the Word was with God." And they make the false conclusion that there is another God bigger and better than Jesus. But what they do not realize is that John is speaking of Jesus in the parables of his day that we call Hebraism, i.e., the way the Hebrews spoke. See, John has already said that Jesus is God, so what he is saying is that Jesus is alone as God. It is like you saying to me, who is writing this post with you.? And I say, I am here with myself. I AM ALONE.
Jesus backs this up in Isaiah 63 when he says:
Who is this coming from Edom,
from Bozrah, with his garments-stained crimson?
Who is this, robed in splendor,
striding forward in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, proclaiming victory,
mighty to save.”
Why are your garments red,
like those of one treading the winepress?
“I have trodden the winepress alone.
from the nations no one was with me.
It was for me the day of vengeance.
the year for me to redeem had come.
I looked, but there was no one to help,
I was appalled that no one gave support.
so my own arm achieved salvation for me,
and my own wrath sustained me.
I trampled the nations in my anger.
in my wrath I made them drunk
and poured their blood on the ground.
And this is the same message Paul gave to the Romans and the same message I am giving to you. We must put our faith in Jesus, and him alone to save us. See, a little more Paulin theology: Anytime you see the words God, the Father, the Son, or the Holy Spirit in the Bible, and especially the writings of Paul, it is Jesus speaking of himself by using another name to express his special uniqueness. We call it speaking in the third person, or illeism for those who like this term. Some people refer to it as Poetic License. See, Jesus as the master poet can speak to anyway he wishes. This is his right as God. And he has chosen to speak to us in Poetic language and he will not change it. That is to say, it is our duty as his little children to listen and try to understand what he has to say. And this is especially true with the literary learning we pride ourselves in that many of us has in the field of higher learning.
See, there is nobody in the universe bigger and better than Jesus. John says of him: "Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not understood it." And oh how true this is! Paul further says in Colossians 1: " For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.
Jesus says of himself in Isaiah 45:
Declare what is to be, present it—
I summon you by name
and bestow on you a title of honor,
though you do not acknowledge me.
5 I am the Lord, and there is no other.
apart from me there is no God. ...
let them take counsel together.
Who foretold this long ago,
who declared it from the distant past?
Was it not I, the Lord?
And there is no God apart from me,
a righteous God and a Savior.
there is none but me.
“Turn to me and be saved."
And he further states in Isaiah 43:10: "People of Israel, you are my witnesses; I chose you to be my servant, so that you would know me and believe in me and understand that I am the only God. Besides me there is no god formed. Nor will there ever be."
I know that many preachers will say that what I have said about Jesus being God alone is not true. And they will argue from now until Jesus comes again that the Father is bigger and better than Jesús. Such is their right to do so as long as Jesus gives them the free will to do so. But I have much more to say to you about this, but it is not the time now. But my message is: Let's get back to calling Jesus God and him alone. Just the way Paul taught the first Roman Christians. An in this way we will truly be doing the will of Jesus who is our father in heaven.
