Last week, canned food giant Del Monte announced it will be phasing out BPA from all its products in the coming years. This is wonderful news.


BPA (Bisphenol-A ) is a chemical used in lining the insides of cans in order to keep the acids in foods from interacting with the can, shortening the shelf life, and changing the flavor of the food.

BPA has been sold since the 1940’s and starting in the 1960’s has been lining the insides of cans in order to extend shelf life. It behaves like the hormone estrogen once it enters the body, disturbing the normal workings of certain genes. Estrogen mimicking chemicals like BPA are potentially harmful even at very low doses, such as those found in plastic bottles and cans.
