The Flickering Candle

Shining so bright
the candle's light
illuminating the window
illuminating the night
the darkest corners
it brings to sight
hidden shadows
beckons to see
from the plantation garden
it reveals a tree
broken and torn
with thorns that bleed
under the tree
lays mounds of flesh
scattered in darkness
the souls can't rest
tortured memories
of a jaded fruit
the candle flickers
as the cool wind coos
whispering spirits
of slaves that died
the tree a reminder
of men hung high
