    The Essence of my Blackness

    I am unique in size, but my thoughts are wise of my stature, in this great nation;
    I realize that my success is linked to the personal elevation of my soul,
    My soul that cries within.
    This is my essence, the essence of my blackness.

    The braids in my hair symbolize the strength of my spirit,
    The intermingling of my personality with nature's true substance, life.
    This is my essence, the essence of my blackness.

    Being wise, I ignore the lies that have been spoken to me through the years
    By men who's own fears have kept them depressed
    And as they regressed, they tried to pull me down,
    But I continue to climb, taking my self-esteem with me, strengthened, by my tears.
    This is my essence, the essence of my blackness.

    I'm not just a bearer of children, but a rearer of children,
    Rearing them up to be responsible adults. Shielding them from suicidal occults,
    That have not been recognized by name; but it is the occult of the "street drug game".
    Fighting to turn boys into men, working from a paycheck that's super-thin;
    Most of the time not feeling well, but still I excel,
    Yes I excel in my woman-ness, which is my essence.
    This is my essence, the essence of my blackness.

    I am a woman complete, not of conceit, but in confidence in all that I do.
    My beauty does impress and express the real me, a sensational, sensual, no words to describe,
    Indescribable, as Maya has said,
    Phenomenal Woman, this is me at my best!
    I do not need your approval, I've passed a self-test!
    Now I'm off on the road to a greater success, which is to share with my sisters,
    Both young and grown, to help them find their own essence.
    For the essence of my blackness is not my own. I share because I care,
    And I've been there in despair, where most women have been.
    Sometimes I fall, but I continue to rise again and again and again, motivated by my essence.
    For my true essence is my strength!

    Yes, this is my essence, the essence of my blackness!
