The Economic Basis of Politics by Charles Austin Beard
Would you say the power of the State is vested in the poor and the many or the wealthy, politically connected and the few?
In this age of gross materialism, the source you provided is correct that, short of military force, political power goes to those with property [aka wealth]. But it does not talk about where the political power originates from which the oligarchs end up with.
No matter how rich, how propertied, oligarchs may be, they rarely have to pick up a gun or sword personally and wield the power of the State. They tend to be old and few of number, literally ensuring they could not, physically, wield the considerable power of the State. What occurs is that the few --- the oligarchs --- pick up a phone, or write a check, or otherwise talk a good game, and convince the many --- the people --- to pick up a gun or sword and wield the power of the State for the many --- the oligarchs. Every time one of the many enlists in the military, or puts on a policeman's uniform, or participates in the collection of a presumed debt from a poor person to an oligarch, they divest themselves of power and give it to the oligarchs.
This, by the way, explains why the media works so hard to perpetuate the myths of the military being "our boys", the police being "the good guys", and the citizens who vote being "responsible". It is all a fraud purposefully orchestrated by the few --- the oligarchs --- to convince the many to divest themselves of their conglomerate power and invest it in the oligarchs.
This is the Way of our gross materialist age. It does not have to be that way. Hence I disagree with your source that this is natural. It is that way only because the many --- the people --- are fools easily misled.
You are absolutely correct.
That's another thread .
Should I start it or will you?
