I'm wondering.. thinking: by not allowing enslaved Africans to read, and by
enforcing the law with such swift cruelty, even upon the Slavers.. did that
dynamic elevate, at least in the minds of the enslaved, books and the
written word.. to the level of God?

I can see an enslaved people thinking to themselves that "there must be
something mighty powerful, magical.. in them books for them to go through
all this trouble to stop us from reading.."

I wonder also, if that was not a part of the white supremacists plan.. to get
the enslaved African to look outside of himself for wisdom.. to, effectively,
    divide him against himself.

I wonder.. Even today I know plenty of folks that regard the written word
as some sort of truth, simply because it's in a book. Its like they don't trust
their own observations until they are validated by some authority. I think
it's an interesting question.. and I plan to explore it a bit more offline..

    Peace,

Wonder no more. What you say is actual fact. Those of us who research this line of thinking will tell you that the devil (white man) has always desired to control the way we think about life and reality by controlling what and how we learn. This isn't a secret. It is through written and verbal propaganda that God (the black man) has been turned into a mystery spook. Instead of depending on self to deal with daily problems, many of our people have been taught to pray, set up at home and wait that mystery God to make everything all better.

    Peace

    This is

just a great thread that has many layers. Just look at how high the literacy rate is in our community compared to others and I say it is because some of our people still dont get the importance of reading. I say that based on having run a literacy program for 5 years 2001-2006 and saw up close and personal how critical it is that our kids have mentors who stress reading. If they cant read they cant learn. I will be back to this thread..

    To your point LindaChavis,

I've always suggested that in every black household, at least one wall in
the house should be filled, from floor to roof, with books and no more than 10% of them fiction.

It's a definite possibility, and to some extent, it is very true. There are folks who refuse to go on instinct and what is evident in front of them simply because it is not 'verified' in a written document. Now, personally, there is a lot to be said for the written word as well, for as much as it can spread lies, it can also harbor and save truths. It's all about intent.

Not necessarily, for one thing the narratives of brothers and sisters purchased by Quakers and set free stated that formal education was mandatory, in the Motherland from toddler to teen, now wether we had a written language or not is not clear becuase, much was kept secret from one group to another.
Also the sciences were no stranger to us West Africans since the records show that we were known for our masonry skills, now seen in the major structures all over the south.

We risked life and limb to read, the same way we would have risked life and limb to get a gun, a tool for liberation
The records state that when freed we excelled in all of the curiculli so fast that it scared the former slave owners, now mind you there was a peer pressure system amongst the children and teens in Africa towards scholastic achievement and excellence

Now if one wants to get esoteric about alphabets and recorded words, the hieroglyphs in Kemet and in the artifacts in museums, will trigger higher centers within one of higher conciousness in time, and contemplation,
for those with African genes and DNA

I would agree that the written word is over emphasized in the western world and it’s indoctrination systems. I feel fortunate to not have given iI t to much focus as others have. My wife for example was a book warm all her life, she is very smart two 4.0 degrees in biology, one a masters in bio-pathology. The problem is she and others have a an unrealistic view of the world, as if there are experts on every subject in life. Instead of being highly experienced in life yourself, Like me.

Granted an education is valid and it can open doors to many aspects and subjects one would not have been exposed to other wise. I think a balance between book learning and a lot of actual first hand experience would be the best. Being over educated (indoctrinated) into false constructs often lead to surreal expectation of life and of others!

I try to think about these things in really human terms.. I don't think of the
white man as the devil or the black man as god.. and that's not to say
that that is not true.. perhaps one day I will discover just that.. but to my
present thinking, I see the european as a schemer.. I see an entire culture
built around scheming.. and trickery, deciet and murder... but I see all of those
things as very very human.. evil is human.. I think the concept of devil
actually relieves the european of some responsibility.. cause how could a man
be so cruel to another man? to murder children and women for gold? "oh..
    it must be the devil
    ".. "no. it was you."

    Peace,

I see you on that. What I'll add is your description of white people and their culture is pretty much synonymous with what original people around the world associate with devil. I'll save that build for another day though. Just keep in mind that someone told you that everything is real..... there is no mystery god and there is no mystery devil.

    Peace

I agree with that.. I just think it's necessary to understand that any of
us can become that same kind of human evil.. by believing as they believe
and doing what they do.. See, I'm just as worried about a birthing a Black
supremacist mentality as I am about white supremacy. In my mind, the
goal of white supremacy is to convert the world to it's way of thinking.
Look at what the Germans turned the Jews into.. Hitler won WWII.
