Gray Webb was a investigative journalist for the San Jose Mercury News. He wrote a book titled "Dark Alliance." In the book he indicated that the CIA had knowledge that the Contras of Nicaragua was smuggling cocaine into the United States to be sold and used as "crack" in order for them to finance their war against the Sandinistas. There was evidence suggesting that the CIA, if not directly involved were indirectly involved. In any case they knew and just stood by and didn't a thing about it.

In 2004, Webb was writing another book giving more details and insight into the CIA and the U.S knowledge of the crack trade. He was found shot dead that year with two bullets in his head. Even though he had been battling depression, it was ruled a suicide. A movie had been made about his investigation titled "Kill the Messenger."
