    The Builders

    We , too sing America
Yeah, that’s right, we sing it.
We sing it in the songs of Mahailia,
and in the sweet sounds of Marian.
We sing it loud in the songs of Paul Roberson, B.B. King, and Leontyne Price.
Oh yeah, We too sing America,
And, as a matter of fact,
    We, too write America,
We wrote it in Alex Hayley’s Roots.
We wrote it with Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes in beautiful and powerful words.
    We, too taught America.
We taught many of the lessons that she learned.
We taught business with Maggie Walker.
We taught science with Charles Drew.
We even taught how to teach through Mary McCleod Bethune.
    We, too led America.
We helped to conquer hate and wars.
We did it through Ralph Bunche, the peacemaker, and the dynamic Dr. King.
Through the quiet strength of Rosa, and the awesome power of the children yet to come,
    We, too built America,
    And she’s beautiful,
    Just like us.
