This is a on going thread to bring attention to pioneering blacks that helped shape our history, and made strides for the black race that we were told about. Feel free to add you own forgotten heroes.

Or to bring any mistakes to my attention that I have made in my postings. This is about accuracy, not ego.

    George Washington (1817-1905)
On January 8, 1875, the Washingtons filed the plat for their town, which they called Centerville, at the Lewis County courthouse in nearby Chehalis. The initial plat consisted of four blocks platted into lots, which Washington offered for sale at $10 per lot to anyone who would settle in the town. Washington later filed additional plats, adding to the size of the town. The Washingtons gave land to their Baptist congregation for a church and cemetery, and helped build the church. They also set aside land for a public square, which became Centralia's City Park, now named George Washington Park.

This is the town he founded, and the last time I drove thru there, I saw no traces of his contribution. He's nowhere in the historical material they pass out for little kids to teach them about Wa. history.

    Bush, William Owen (1832-1907)

William Owen Bush was the eldest son of George Washington Bush (1790?-1863), of Irish and African American descent, and Isabella James Bush (1809?-1866), a German American. In 1844 he accompanied his parents and four younger brothers on an arduous wagon trek west with several families of white settlers. Their original goal was the Willamette Valley in Oregon Territory, but the provisional government there had recently passed a law banning black residency. Most of the party moved north, eventually settling around present-day Tumwater in Thurston County. The Bushes were an exceptional family, close-knit and known and respected for their thrift, industriousness, and above all, generosity.

After a failed attempt at statehood in 1878, a constitutional convention was held in Washington Territory in 1889 to again write a proposed state constitution and seek admission to the Union. This was ratified by the voters on October 1, 1889, and President Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) issued a proclamation admitting Washington as a state on November 11 of that year. Voters also elected the state's first executive officers and legislators, and one of those chosen for the state House of Representatives was William Owen Bush.

In reading the link, it safe to say that this family was richer than most whites, and owned more land. And being friends with chief Leschi only boosted that fame. The Leschi Nation is big here in Wa.state. here is a little read of what happen to their chief. But like his father, he and his legacy is unheard of.

    Black Codes and Pig Laws
Immediately after the Civil War ended, Southern states enacted "black codes" that allowed African Americans certain rights, such as legalized marriage, ownership of property, and limited access to the courts, but denied them the rights to testify against whites, to serve on juries or in state militias, vote, or start a job without the approval of the previous employer. These codes were all repealed in 1866 when Reconstruction began.

    The Black Codes
All the slave codes, however, had certain provisions in common. In all of them the color line was firmly drawn, and any amount of Negro blood established the race of a person, whether slave or free, as Negro. The status of the offspring followed that of the mother, so that the child of a free father and a slave mother was a slave. Slaves had few legal rights: in court their testimony was inadmissible in any litigation involving whites; they could make no contract, nor could they own property; even if attacked, they could not strike a white person. There were numerous restrictions to enforce social control: slaves could not be away from their owner's premises without permission; they could not assemble unless a white person was present; they could not own firearms; they could not be taught to read or write, or transmit or possess "inflammatory" literature; they were not permitted to marry.

A liberal as the pacific northwest was, Washington, and Oregon has their share of black codes.

    Aunt Clara Brown
    [IMG]
Often called the “Angel of the Rockies,”
Clara Brown reflects the richness of the
    African-American experience. She faced
    enormous challenges and reached
wonderful heights in her nearly eighty-five
years. Turning her back on her life in
slavery, she looked west for the children
she had lost. She then became one of the
first African-American women to settle in
Colorado. Clara was skillful in business
ventures and investments that earned her
thousands of dollars. She also gained a
reputation for community care. She helped
people of all races, but she worked
especially hard to bring black people out
    of poverty and enslavement.
