repost, because in my line of work....well....anyway... :(

    “The Abyss”

Standing on the precipice of love,
well, what disguises itself as love
    to those who know not
    (ignorant/blind to the qualities thereof)

    as I was saying…

standing on the edge of inexperience,
    misconception, no direction
    (subsequently, NO protection) ~
as if we need to protect ourselves…

    see,
    we be like,
    sleep walking
fast talking ourselves into the unknown

    but
it don’t have to be so
    others have gone this way
    befo

    & lived to tell
    about the living hell
    inside life’s deepest,
    darkest well

    of that bottomless pit
    of the ego trip
    the ugly underbelly
    of vain glory
(can a sista TELL the story?)

    of the flip side
    of the joy ride…

    the domestic violence
    the miseducation
    the NON sense

    the “BUT I LUV HIM”
    syndrome
    wheneva he goes upside
    yo dome

    the neverending nightmare
    of PO leece cars
    when they sirens blare

    wakin neighbors
    all times of night
    another ghetto nikka fight

    & neva wanna let
    tha charges stick
    can’t STAND to be
    without tha~dikk

    cycle, vicious
    life? HELL!
    love? WHAT?
    then death…

    oh well

we stand upon the precipice of something
    that could be everything beautiful
    if we would but look
    before we leap

    into the deep

    abyss…

feeling this tonight, let me see if I can do this :(

for Shacoila, James, Shimone, Sharise, Shalice, Sara, Sharmane, Syreeta, and the three little siblings I don't even know

can I piggy on the blackside
    of the downside?
    can I speak the unspoken
    when crackmama's arm
    got broken?
by the pimp that didn't make
    me
cuz I neva let him wake me
    and when the po-leece came
I begged them to take me

    can I talk?
    about the horrors
that went on at the motel
    when crackmama screamed
and told us our bidnis was no-tell

    can I whisper
that it happened every friday night
    at about the same time
    can I mention when I was 10
    I finally dropped the dime

    crackmama begged and pleaded
    cuz she was a-DyckTED,
but the po-leece cuffed the nikka
    took him down ~
even tho the stories was conflicted

    can I say
    that the place
we stayed, in one room, in one bed
    was the darkside
    of the "joyride"

    the ABYSS
    like you said

    ty MsMamaA...I needed this

    <materializes>

Alyce, once again you have murdered my soul, with your expression. This is a very profound poem, and screams to be heard all across the nation and even the world. I really enjoyed the language that you employed to illustrate this picture of abuse disguised as love; subtle, harsh, and elegant all at the same time. And as someone who knows and has seen women involved in abusive relationships, I feel this one terribly. It brought back a memory of a friend who had to have stitches because her man punched her in the face, and although she was bleeding and hurt, do you know she still defended him. How can you defend a six-foot-two brother punching a five-foot-three sistah (in heels) in the face; and sending her to the hospital? But what can you do when someone doesn't have the strength or the courage to realize that love, real love does not respond or react like that.

Again, tough subject but you executed it and presented it so well that although it speaks of abuse, the poem itself is lovely to behold.
