This has been a serious issue out here in my part too.
The economic downturn has been the main factor for it out here, but even when the boom was booming we would still be hit by what we out here called 'stripping' I worked construction as an electrician and many times while we left for the weekend, come monday our jobsite trailers were broken into and the houses would be stripped not entirely but they would go for service and ground

wiring because they being the size of a broomstick handle (500kcmil, 4/0, 3/0 etc) and bigger. Some copper but mainly aluminum is what contractors were using for cheaper prices when you were buying 250, 500, 1000' rolls at a time.

I think then if you recycled the wire you would get like 60 cents/lb. Of course copper prices varied against aluminum but thats still a good chunk of change for scrapping/ stripping. Some companies i worked with would purposely energize the electrical service as a deterrent.

Recycling companies got smart and so now when turning in scrap wiring and the such you are required to provide a photo id at the least.

Its becoming a norm here in OKC. these thieves would steal anything from anywhere. Even if they have to steal from someone's house with them in it...

This past summer, on the hottest day, some idiot decided to steal the apartment's air unit. You know the ones that sit on top of the buildings? Yeah, they was so desperate to take these that they, too, suffered burns doing it. They did get caught.

People are desperate these days and some don't care if they get caught doing it.
