Why Are Teens Leaving the Church
By Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu - June 14, 2011 (Chicago, Illinois - In the church of the future, the only members will be elder women and children. That is the startling claim made by bestselling author Jawanza Kunjufu in his new book, The Role of Teens in Your Church.

According to Kunjufu, 40 percent of eighth grade students leave the church just as they are becoming teenagers. In addition, 70 percent of female teens and 90 percent of male teens leave the church upon their high school graduation.

Kunjufu argues that with teens leaving in such high numbers, the church is not on a sustainable path of growth. "If children and teens really are our future, then how will the church survive such a massive exodus of youth?" he asks.

    Why Teens Are Leaving
"Age segregation in the church is the last bastion of elder power," says Kunjufu. Senior church leaders say that youth are the future, but youth ministry is usually the least funded in the church. Teens do not feel respected, valued, or welcomed by the church at large.

    What the Church Can Do
Youth ministry is used as an agent of age segregation, but teens and the church would be better served if youth ministry was transformed into an agent of transition, helping to prepare and train youth from 12 years of age-the age Jesus began teaching in the temple-to worship and serve in the adult congregation.

Kunjufu's Bible-based, research-based Teen Empowerment Model was developed from observations of churches across the country, interviews, research, 20 years in youth ministry, 35 years as an education consultant and youth advocate, and prayer. The model repurposes youth ministry as a transitory body that prepares teens for the adult congregation. The model addresses issues such as the spiritual development of youth, parent involvement, the senior pastor's role in youth ministry, and age segregation in adult congregations.

Churches must create a nurturing, Godly climate in which teens can mature to their full potential. To stem the tide of teens leaving the church, The Role of Teens in Your Church persuasively argues that teens and adults should worship and serve together.

If you want to change the world, who better to start with than our youth?

Detroit, MI (BlackNews.com) - Youth In Worship!, a one-evening event hosted by Straight Gate International Church of Detroit, is essentially a concert with religion at its heart. But it speaks to kids in a way unlike most other events targeting teens. Youth in Worship! has tapped into some of the hottest Christian talent of our times and harnesses their energies for one purpose - to bring youth together, uniting them regardless of race, ethnic background to celebrate the Lord.

"Jesus doesn't care what color you are, He cares what's in your heart and how you show the world who He is through your actions," said event host, Bishop Andrew Merritt, founder of Straight Gate International Church.

Youth In Worship! is the first event of a three-day spiritual conference - One In Worship - that aims to unite Christians from around the world. Youth in Worship! will take place on June 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Straight Gate Church, 10100 Grand River in Detroit. Youth in Worship! is free, but seating is limited to 6,000.

Bishop Liston Page of Highway Church in New Jersey will lead the ministry and the gifted Israel Houghton will drive the worship service. Detroit-bred Kierra "KiKi" Sheard and Marvin Winans Jr. will lend their musical voices along with Ramiyah, 2103, Rock Nation, Antwaun Stanley and Cherise Miles.

"This event is filled with the spiritual energy of some extremely talented young artists, some at the beginnings of what will clearly be remarkable careers," Bishop Merritt said...

Religious teen organization spreads the gospel
The Passion for Christ Movement (P4CM) is a grassroots ministry dedicated to helping Los Angeles County at-risk youth develop life skills and spiritual direction. The members of the movement are concerned with impacting the present generation to create a better future, and they offer their services to the community voluntarily.

P4CM has shared the gospel with people all over the world through their Internet testimonials and Ex-shirt campaign which is still going.

The campaign consists of youth who are members of the ministry braving the outside world by laying down their past ungodly ways, and expressing that on a T-shirt. The shirts are customizable and are also available for purchase by the general public. Examples of the T-shirt confessions include EX-athiest, EX-liar, EX-fornicator and many more.

The organization began expanding its effort in 2009 with the “Summer Campaign” which was launched to try to make a difference in the lives of African American and Latino youth......

Americans are slowly becoming less religious (Gallup has a lot of great information). The vast majority of people still believe in some sort of universal creator, but there's been some growth in not being affiliated with any religion (but not necessarily giving up a personal god) and there's been some promising growth in disbelief outright.

My guess is it's the result of a number of things:
    • People who worked hard to put Atheism and Humanism on the discussion table (popular example: The Four Horsemen).
    • Better access to information and communication networks. Previously, this meant there could've been some isolation for people who did not share more "orthodox" beliefs.
    • Churches and religious organizations are constantly being called out on differing things.
    • Religious fundamentalists who are finding themselves more and more on the losing side and taking insane measures to try to counter progress (Creation Museums, attempting to make things like miscarriage or still-birth a crime, etc., the rights of LGBT citizens).

Everytime I think there is hope though I'm reminded by the ghastly union formed by American politics, religious fundamentalism, and patriotism that things still have quite a long way to go.

Teenagers are rebellious by nature. It has been a constant battle to draw and keep youth in church with spiritual guidance and away from the pressures/snares of their environments and peers.

What teens need to know, hear and memorize is that -- our history began centuries before slavery and the flawed biblical text as written by Europeans.

I like your response, Gorilla. Religion is not the answer, never has been -- never will be -- b/c its a control device. And to my knowledge a control device has never been beneficial to "its followers". This mechanism rather keeps them asleep, mentally enslaved and spirit-less.

Now I wonder why teens would leave an establishment that is in no way geared towards anything relevant to them. I can understand them leaving the church but unfortunately many teens won't seek the knowledge necessary to stay on the right path once free of the religious mind control.

Greetings Brother maf! I agree...throwing the baby out with the bath water isn't the answer either.

    Blessings!
