    today I caught wind
    of yet another grave sin
    it happened right across town
    they gunned another brother down
a hit on an innocent man by members no doubt of the klan
he was living in his automobile
    perhaps surviving meal-to-meal

the man was very well known
    by residents of surrounding homes
and the boys in blue as well
knew of his condition and resultant spells
his sanity was less than par
yet he never caused anyone harm

    the twenty two wounds
    that constituted his doom
were not much fewer than his years
    that fact alone precipitates tears
I imagine it compounds the grief
of his loved ones who'll not soon know peace

perhaps he would still be here
had the firing squad jury been made up of his peers
but he had not much of a chance
when his mob of assailants proceeded to lance
armed with glocks they claimed his life
his arms were a cane and pocket knife

it was late it was dark and our eyes played tricks
we thought it was a shotgun he threatened us with
    that was the executioners' defense
we were afraid for our lives
    our actions are justified
    to protect ourselves we aimed
anyone in our position would have done the same

but who is protected or truly safe
when those sworn to shield us fire in haste
    and only in OUR community
can they terrorize and brutalize and kill with impunity
one by one and another then another
someone's black son, father or brother
then after a brief suspension with pay
the villains return in a matter of days
    maybe even win a promotion
makes me suspect they have quotients

let loose again onto our streets
they barge in to ask who else wants some heat
    when will the madness stop
when will they prosecute killer cops
    discontinue devaluing our pigment
    harness their obviously racist malignance
in the meantime it is up to civilians
to stand our own guard with videocameras reeling
