Ebla Tablets: No Biblical Claims

When 11,000 clay tablets dating from 23 centuries before Christ were unearthed in northern Syria three years ago, biblical scholars around the world rejoiced that ancient proof had been found for the Old Testament.


"The tablets were being hailed as a find equal in importance to the Dead Sea Scrolls," said Dr. Robert Biggs, professor of Assyriology at the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute. "The claims being made for these tablets created a sensation in biblical circles."

Curiously, Ka nana was mentioned in Egypt though and although Egypt is mentioned in the OT 700 times (so much that the entire story would fall apart without it), Israel is mentioned, speculatively, just once in all of the Egyptian writings, so we go to Syria for verification? hummmm

Correct, Israel is mentioned only once as you say, in the Merneptah Stela (Stele). And that extra-biblical proof cannot be considered to clarify anything beyond that fact, based on translation issues.

But why would going to Syria for verification be problematic, I'm confused?

Ancient Syria and the Levant are only a stones throw from Egypt, metaphorically speaking. We know Syria's Hebrew name is Aram, and that Syria is derived from Assyria; also, Syria-Damascus, is mentioned 300 times in the Bible.
