...observations from an ongoing convo with a sista/friend....

his mid-life awakening must have been too painful...
that's the best conclusion I can come to

    it's so ironic,
because I remember when he was 'asleep'

walking among men like a pro
    fearless....
    beauty full

    and he had been
    the sensitive type

    brotha could flow

    I don't know if the half-century mark
was too traumatic a line to cross

    here was someone who seemed
    to know his way around

    looking lost...

    cuz when he "woke up"
    it was like some mysterious
    force propelled his movements

like the body-snatchers swooped on him
and the person I thought I knew
    existed
    only in the past-tense

nothing he began to do made any sense
    everything was 180 degrees
    in the opposite direction
he refused what he once said
    he wanted...respect, love, &
    affection...

    something inside....died

    like sudden death
    like a part of his
    former self still carried
    some unfinished bidness
    and the score hadn't been
    settled on life's time-clock
and he had an extra few minutes
    like overtime
    like grace

    but this mid-life awakening thang
must have been more than he could live with....

    cuz when he "came to"...

score was zero across the board

    &
    we couldn't identify the body

have you written about this person before..has a familiar ring to it..someone who has so much talent and does not/cannot use it?...and it was making you sad..or have I got it all wrong....this piece was written with deep concern for a friend/from a friend...you shine..as always

What I appreciated most about this..is the simple dignity of truth that it holds...your attempt to understand him..to come to terms with his tragic flaws..without harsh judgements. Only you can write about human flaws with such eloquence and dignity

thank-you for this one poet...I felt it within
