a new study published in the Annals of Epidemiology found that African-American men have a higher rate of death outside of prison than they do while they serve time.

The study followed 100,000 men between the ages of 20 to 79 who were held in North Carolina prisons between 1995 and 2005. According to the study’s findings, less than one percent of the men died while in prison (this number was fairly split between Black and White inmates). However, outside of prison African-American men had a much higher rate of death than their white counterparts.

While incarcerated, Black men seemed to be protected against alcohol-and drug-related deaths, suicide, murder, as well as various chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. But the greatest protector against death for Black male inmates? Access to health care.

Its more dangerous on the streets than in prison...The government sees no need of getting rid something/one who has already been gotten.

How about Nubians take care of their own health care and create their own institutions to access?

    In the Spirit of Sankofa,

    .......Brother Elder,

What are we suppose to do with this report, applaud it? What are your real thoughts on this matter of black men fairing better in Prison than those living life in America, really?

This is about as awful as Michele Bachmann's recent gaffe on blacks fairing better during slavery then now under the first African American President, Mr. Barack Obama....nothing more than absurdity and spin.

    http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/177864/20110711/michele-bachmann-slavery.htm

Here's a more central question within the report that should be at issue in this thread discussion:

The findings of the study are bleak but may lead to greater improvements in healthcare. If prisoners are better off in prison, then what does that say about the conditions plaguing low-income communities and the services being offered to people of color?

When the day comes that prison life for blacks supersedes life in the black communities, in general, we are on a wanton course in uncharted waters at the direction of fledgling Racism.

    Peace In,

Who within this forum does not have access to health care? Are you telling me that with medicade, medicare, and government mandated ER access as well as the ability to call an ambulance for a sore throat, somebody can claim they don't have access to health care???? With $4 dollar subscriptions and the like, are you telling me that somebody can claim that they don't have access to health care? I ain't buyin' it.

The study dealt with 100,000 male prisoners between 20-79 in North Carolina prisons between 1995-2005 – 60 percent of the prisoners were black. Within prison, less than one percent of the men died and there was no difference in the death rates of black men and white men. But outside of prison, the statistics varied greatly as Blacks have a much higher rate of death at any age, than white males.

The access to healthcare was a big variable in survival rates. “Ironically, prisons are often the only provider of medical care accessible by these underserved and vulnerable Americans,” Hung-En Sung of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York told Reuters.
