This is dedicated to the victims of Domestic Violence

As I look into the mirror,
the jagged pieces of what is left,
on the wall, shattered on the floor,
    my reflection is startling,
    distorted, disfigured.
    But I am loved.

My lip is swollen, I taste the salt of my soul
on my tongue. I close my eyes.
My cheek is swelling, maybe it is broken.
Thank you for the matching set of broken bones,
you only did it because you care.

In the midst of your madness,
    amongst all that is destroyed,
    hearts, bones, promises and dreams,
I pull myself up like a gymnast,
    competing for the gold,
    fighting with the other athletes
....yet, I am fighting for my life.

Your love is toxic, demeaning and bitter.
You say you'll love me to death,
is that what you're trying to do?

    Realistically, you hate me,
for why else would say slay me slowly?

    No one understands my staying,
'til the reflection they stare at is their own.
I'm not to be pitied, judged or murdered.
So I am leaving on my own accord.
    Taking back what is mine,
    what you have not stolen,
that which is stronger than your fist.

    Powerful Peace...

I know a survivor or two...
    and those psychological scars...
    never seem to go away
    no one should ever have
    to go through this...
but getting out is the key...

    Wow...this was soul wrenching...

And it is a very wise thing to head for the door...fast. I like that piece very much, for if it helps only one...you're done a good thing. nice flow.

Thank you Sage, MBA and Queen

My mother is a survivor, the closest to me that I know. I wrote it a few years ago when I started hearing of the abusers getting younger and younger, and just needed to get my feelings down on paper. Thanks for sharing and receiving this.

Such a sorrowful story this is, for we know this truly happens, but this did end on a positive note. Powerful write.

Rich and Watz: Thank you again. I know of some folks, and this was my piece for them. It's never acceptable.

Powerfully written...I really love the way you ended it too.

    Taking back what is mine,
    what you have not stolen,
that which is stronger than your fist.

    ...keep flowing gurl...keep flowing.
