I always knew I was gonna be different
In this world, being black not as black
As some, and not as light as others,
but still the same called un-forgotten names.

I always knew the world would play me a
different hand, didn’t grow up on the beach,
collect sea shells or dig my toes in the sand
didn’t have a father around to call the man.

I always knew things would be different for me,
didn’t know I would be raped, beat, abused and see
people hanging from tree’s, didn’t know my name would
be changed and I would be called *****, colored,
kicked and shackled in chains.

I always knew I would have to try harder then others
learn more; speak less change the way I acted,
the way I dressed , but what difference has it
ever made “I’m still black cant ever change that.

Nor would I want to…
