Apophis, for those who may not know, was a Satan-esque deity in ancient KMT/Egypt [aka Apep]. I say Satan-esque because it was painted as a serpent in KMT. This corresponds to biblical scripture which associates the devil/Satan with a snake/serpent [Genesis 3:1-15, Revelations 12:9]:

There is also a more recent association with Apophis. Specifically, that is the name given to a 300 meter wide asteroid which is headed in the direction of Earth. Will it hit us? That is a possibility which even NASA is not denying. But, different scientists from different countries over the last few years have differed as to how likely that is. NASA's current official stance is that a collision with us is unlikely. But, just so you know, NASA's initial position was that the odds were 1 in 30 which would have been _highly_ likely. They have revised those odds twice since then to where it is now --- about 1 in 250,000.

Youtube has a video of Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson who does a good job of summarizing where we are, today, on this. Tyson presents his information in a comical way designed not to cause the sheep to panic. But, note, he also does not deny that there is a possibility a collision could occur and, if so, the consequences would be truly devastating:

    Other notes of interest:
    • The European Space Agency does have a study called Don Quijote which is investigating methods to deflect an asteroid off course. They are stressing, again so as not to panic the sheep, that this is just a study and that Apophis has not been chosen as an asteroid to focus their study upon:
    • The Russian Space Agency has been far less politically correct about avoiding causing the sheep to panic, even going so far as criticizing the rest of the world [Europe and the US] for not taking this more seriously:

Final item of interest. The closet estimate of when Apophis will first come closest to Earth will be [and Dr. Tyson mentions this, again comically so as to not cause the sheep to panic] on April 13, 2029 --- which just happens to be ... Friday the 13th.

Proof that God has a sense of humor?

Anyway, the best guess is that Apophis will come close, but not hit, the Earth on that date. But, what is expected to pose an even greater danger is that there is an chance Apophis might slingshot back and, on its way back, then it would crash into the Earth.

So, girls and boys, mark the April 13, 2029 date on your calendar. Apophis is expected to come so close that you will be able to look up and see it with the naked eye.

It's seventeen years from now. This heads up is a wee bit early.

Reminds me of the blokes talking about the Sun's explosion.
