The people of Southern Sudan are preparing to vote in a referendum on independence from the Muslim-dominated north of the country.Sudan has been governed from the northern capital Khartoum since the end of the civil war in 2005.However, it is now likely that the poll will split Africa's biggest nation in two.

A senior official in Southern Sudan's ruling party has said that there is no need to delay the country's January 9 independence vote, and accused the Khartoum-based National Congress Party of attempting to push back the vote.

Five weeks remain until the south is scheduled to vote on an independence referendum that could see the south break away from the north and create the world's newest country.

A new african nation could be born.

Whats everyone's opinions on this?

Well...the country is in trouble now because of this man:

Omar al-Bashir

Who is being asked to delay the vote...let's see how it plays out, because Bashir is in trouble:

Sudanese president charged with genocide

The International Criminal Court on Monday charged Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir with three counts of genocide in Darfur, a move that will pile further diplomatic pressure on his isolated regime.

Hopefully the Southern Sudan will not end up another balkanized sham-democracy that is dependent upon western capitalism for its economic and political viability.

It's about time. Africa has enough arabized self-hating blacks and coloreds. The south deserves to be able to exercise their own self-determination. Hopefully they can remain free of european and Arab colonialism

My thoughts exactly except this region is RICH in oil reserves. So then theres the whole idea of the the US trying to deliberately stir and destabilise the Sudanese government to for resources.

This is a quote from what Runoko Rashidi said in 07 when he visited Southern Sudan.

"They are proud of themselves for beating the Arabs encroaching from the north. One elder stated with pride that "We have kept the rest of Africa free from Arabization!"
