From the mind of a son...to his father
{fathers...try to understand}
since my beginning
people have been telling me
how to do
what to do
(and) when to do it
all for the sake of
WE DON'T WANT YOU TO SCREW IT (up)
people have made it their business
to mind my business
saying; "listen,
you're bound to go far."
Squash that...
i've gots to be a man
i'm not trying to be DA MAN
just wanna be my own man
i hope you understand
your son's gotta live his own life
build a home
hopefully...find a good wife
make a way on his own
feel me.
when i bear a son
i want him to be proud
of the work i've done
for him
from now on
(if) people keep telling me
"keep it real, dawg
like you wanna be"
you'll see
all will be good
as you want it to be.
you taught me good
told me what to see
...what to look for
in front,
back,
and all around me
showed me
all you meet
you don't wanna be.
you've told me
but you can't protect me
from the many paths
of (my) destiny
from up's and downs
and life's many woes
unhappiness
and all these ho's
{whoa...apologies...i didn't say that)
...all these beautiful ladies
everyday, i see
strutting their booties
right in front of me
you can't protect me
from the twinges of sadness
we, at times, endure
deception from others
whose hearts aren't pure
and when those heartaches
creep up on me
i'll suffer the pain
you can't protect me
but i thank you for trying.
you've taught me that thugging
and drugs are wrong
doing so will find me
one day
all alone
that many evil acts
bear a price to pay
that man (or GOD)
will collect
someday
you told me that smoking
isn't good for your health
abuse of anything
carries the possibility of
death
robbing and stealing
will buy you a cell
and killing a brutha...
well...
you've imparted your wisdom
i know what to do
just let me be me
coz i can't be you
{Moms and Dads...
i know it's hard
but...one day...you have to let go
cut the apron strings
and let your son grow
and, though, you don't know
all these things you've told him
he heard you
believe me
HE HEARD YOU}
i mean no disrespect
i'm just trying to be me
my father's oldest son
my mother's baby b.
you've given me the tools
to be successful...on my own
courageous
wise
even handsome and strong
when i walk out the door
i'll still be your son
wouldn't disgrace my poppa bear
Mom...
it has to be done
you can't protect me from the monsters
asleep
under the bed
you can't protect me from the system
or
the woman in red
but i do understand
you don't wanna see me hurt.
i love you, too
both of you.
