    I decided to grow natural
and you said I must be on some pro black s@#t
you said my hair was my beauty
and I should never part with it
you said you like me the way your use to seeing me
how could you ask a bird not to fly
you ask me why in the world I would choose to be nappy
or could you treat me to a perm
you ask me am I having money problems
because my naps have suddenly appeared
from underneath a mass of long hair dried by relaxer
I made up my mind knowing what I wanted to do
and nothing you said could sway me
for having always admiring the brotha with the manicured locs
or the sistah with the banging fro
I knew that natural was the way I wanted to grow
So I made the appointment to rid myself of the old me
and smiled at the notion of being happy, nappy and free
here's to new beginnings and the loving of me
I arrive at the salon and the beautician talks to me for a half hour
why do you want to be nappy/you sure won't find a job
white folks won't hire you with that nappy stuff she says
I figured this was going to happen and I stick to my guns
the haircut is complete and not a tear in my eye
I watched in the mirror as she got rid of the LYE
she gave me the handheld so I could peep the front, back, side
I was pleasantly surprised and admit I do look fine
now the hairdresser says **** maybe I'll do mine
Its funny how things change but still remain the same
folks still believing nappy hair is ugly
    still playing the whitemans game
So you thought my hair was my beauty
and to your surprise I cut it all
and yet you say I'm glowing
perhaps my natural beauty is blinding
    hair so short,nappy,kinky,knotty and all
Silly me got caught in the matrix
    for a minute or two
thinking perhaps I would be ugly without the old doo
    So like you
    I experienced a ephiphany
    for its not the hair
    that determines the beauty
    but the
    beauty in you.

    On the DL no more!

You know as a woman/man thinketh so shall he be? Well you know you are a poet! And now we know it too...So relax , vibe and scribe and grow and fly and before you know it, you will be blowing up the house at open mic's , slams...whateva yo heart's desire...set the world on fire with this one sweetie...and I like to think I know a thing or two about writing since it's what I do for a living...we love when a new poet comes on the scene and can hold it down like this...and speaking of Nappy, that LYE about beauty of the straight hair got MSLB in a short doo too! So we go back to our Nappi Roots! And be Nappi and Happi!

    Blessings On Ya House!

Go 'head poet! No pun intended...hehe. I received reviews that weren't so rave when I switched to braids from lye. I wasn't surprised when it came from my white co-workers but was taken back to hear snide remarks from my sistas. It's crazy. Loving my braids tho...lovin the natural me.

I remember when I went natural people thought I was CRAZY to cut off my hair, like the hair made me? This is a perfect poem for people who don't know who they are and think that the things we are born with such as hair, make you the person you are.

I am viben off this piece, mos def!
