Slavery in Africa has gotten a lot of headlines in the news over the last few years. It is a serious issue, and a crime against our people. As the descendants of enslaved Africans, no African American should turn their head on the sufferings of our brothers. However, modern slavery is depicted in International Media as an African issue. As this article points out, much of the world's slaves are actually in Asia & Latin America. This is a global issue, a crime against humanity, not just Africa. We have to look for ways to end these institutions of exploitating the defenseless. However at the same time we need to be cautious about how the media portrays crimes being unique to Africa, when in reality they exist in all lands.

That's why the mainstream media cannot be our only, or even our main, source of information. They're not going to tell us the truth and we know this. Focusing on slavery in Africa is a way to excuse American slaveery--"See the descendants of Ham are just born to be slaves. They will always be slaves even in their own land so why pick on white America."

    Pan Africa

    Funny you brought this up...

A couple days ago I was reading a book that said most of the world's slaves currently reside in the nation of India...not the continent of Africa.

Slavery is among the world's oldest of institutions and wasn't just limited to black people.

Infact the word "slave" comes from the word "Slav".

The Slavs are Eastern Europeans and just a few centuries ago so many of them were enslaved by the Muslims that their ethnicity became synonymous with slavery.

there was a poster a short while ago in the reparations forum who used that exact logic to oppose reparations.

let's say that there are 100,000 slaves in Africa and 10,000,000 in India.
the media is going straight to the African situation.
    we know this.

i believe there are more slaves in Asia than in all the rest of the world combined.

there was a poster a short while ago in the reparations forum who used that exact logic to oppose reparations.

I'm trying to imagine how that could be done. hmmmmm. It's not coming to me. Guess I'll have to slide over there and see what's what.

Let's stop right now before we hi-jack brotha Pan's thread with a discussion on reparations.

    Ike

    Respect

    Good looking out bro.

    James

White people love to play word games, especially when it comes to international and historic issues such as slavery and race.

When black people are forced to work and are owned by others, historically we are called slaves in history books.

However when whites or Asians are forced to work and are legally the property of others...they are called and written as "indentured servants" and "laborers".

This fits into what sista River was talking about because white peopel can't accept that they were also slaves to...so they make up different terms for thier servitude.

Also...thousands of Asian (Chinese and East Indian) slaves were brought to the Caribbean and South Africa by the British to work, but many people don't know this.

Chinese were slaves on the west coast of the US during the gold rush and the building of the railroads i think.
i believe Chinese were slaves in the US along with Africans.

I'm glad U have pointed this out 2 us, bro. p., we have got 2 step up & speak out.

If it happens in the so-called 3rd worlds, what's 2 say that they won't try it here.

All it takes is 4 them 2 rearrange some amendments, (like prohibition was overturned), insert some clauses, pass new laws, & there we are again.

But next time it'll be all of the homeless & imprisoned...oh, I forgot, prisoners are slaves.
