i've got this thing with doors
growing up in my house
doors were a way to express yourself
when my father would storm out of the house in anger
he would be sure to slam the back door
we lived in an old house, an old colonial house
with solid oak doors
they could take a slamming
they could take a beating
as a teenager we always expressed the limits of our anger
by slamming bedroom doors..."BAM" replaced anything you really wanted to say...cause you knew better than to say it
as an adult in my own home
the first thing i noticed
was that the doors weren't as sturdy
you could slam them, but i think that they are hollow inside
the doors in my home are hollow inside
so they cannot stand
the slam, the lock, the BAM, the expression
that i am trying to achieve...they lack that solid oak balance
needless to say
at least two doors in my home need to be replaced
i practiced kicking one of them out of the frame
i had just watched the movie GIA
BAM! with my left foot
i did not expect to hear the door knob hit the floor
i gasped as i saw the utter destruction of the frame
i missed my childhood home
i thought to myself...i must visit my father soon
maybe he will annoy me and i can SLAM the door on the way out
i can feel a sense of security as i storm down the concrete steps
and smile as i hear his laughter and his come back soon sarcasm
i can no longer slam doors in my own home
i cannot continue to pay the carpenter
he already looks at me funny
i now must be content
to replace slamming doors
with maturity...silence...and keep the slamming doors in my heart
